Message from the president

Japan Society for Science Education (JSSE)was founded in 1977 for the purpose of promoting research on ¡Æeducation about science¡Çand on ¡Æeducation through scientific and technological means.¡Ç For that reason, from the very beginning of its history, JSSE covers more research areas thanother associations of science education in Japan do. Furthermore, its coverageof research areas still expands extensively and significantly since there hasbeen emerging important issues relevant to science and technology education: Forexample, technologicalization of our society, promotion of a national policy called¡Æa nation based on the creativity of science and technology,¡Ç and prevailingphenomena called disenchantment of science among children and general public. Also, such changes among society and people may trigger prospective changes inschooling, in general, and science and mathematics teaching, in particular.

Various professionals have already beenparticipating in our activities. Among them are researchers interested in therelationship between science and education, practicing teachers of science, mathematics, technology and home economics, teachers interested in ICT,university professors teaching undergraduate science and mathematics courses, teacher educators of science and mathematics, science and mathematics teachertrainers involved in international cooperation programs, cognitive scientistsinterested in children¡Çs learning, science museum educators, sciencejournalists, and science and technology policy makers.

It is a great pleasure for me to invitethose who are interested in JSSE. All of us are welcome you to our researchfronts.

Masakata OGAWA

President of JSSE
